30 years later, Dallas Mavericks TV voice nears his college degree
Approximately 30 years after starting college, he is on track to earn his Bachelor of Applied Arts and Sciences degree from UNT in December.

He’s 49 with a good-paying job, and Mark Followill does not need his college degree.

When the TV play-by-play voice of the Dallas Mavericks and often FC Dallas left the University of North Texas in 1992, he had 60 credit hours to his name.

“I left to start working because I was 20-something and impatient,” Followill said.

As higher ed institutions attempt to plan for the fall semester—amid uncertainty and continuous change—it is critical for their instructors to plan for engaging online courses immediately.

As the COVID-19 pandemic evolves from an urgent public health crisis to an economic catastrophe, higher education institutions are bracing for long-term impact while working around the clock to continue delivering instruction.

Among faculty and institutional leaders, the collective conversation thus far has been largely focused on moving courses to online delivery this term–and understandably so. But what first felt like a crisis of emergency course design is going to very quickly become a course completion crisis. And we need to be ready.

Virtual moderators for more UNT students in the future

More students will be coached by computers over the coming semesters thanks to a growing University of North Texas partnership.

Students in select online classes will have software suggest ways to improve their comments and questions when professors have them post in the online forum.

The program is called Packback, a company started by two college students who were looking to make textbooks more affordable. They’ve pivoted since their appearance on the television show Shark Tank to attempt an improvement in student engagement and critical thinking in online classes.

They are poised to emerge from the coronavirus pandemic with tech platforms that have the power to dominate. The start-ups making the 2020 Disruptor list are at the epicenter of a world changing in previously unimaginable ways, turning ideas in cybersecurity, education, health IT, logistics/delivery, fintech and agriculture into a new wave of billion-dollar businesses.

New online certificate programs
The 15-hour Data Analytics undergraduate and graduate certificate programs could be completed in as little as seven months.

The ability to analyze data and translate it into useful insights and solutions for everything from saving the bees to navigating the new post-coronavirus world is in high demand.

According to “Forbes” magazine, very few people have the skills needed to understand and analyze data effectively despite data analytics being one of the most important tools for any company. To address the demand, the University of North Texas is offering two new fully-online certificates in data analytics starting Summer 2020.

There is a breadth of information and best practices guidelines on ways to use discussion forums in online learning environments. Online discussion is an important area of research in both the scholarship of teaching and learning and educational technology. Unfortunately, it presents several hurdles to successful implementation.
